The term Holocaust, Jewish (1939–1945) is used in this outline and the Family History Library Catalog to describe various records and publications that document the genocide of European Jews during World War II. Before WWII over 80% of the world’s Jews lived in Central and Eastern Europe. During WWII Jewish communities in these areas were systematically destroyed. The Holocaust, migration issues, and naming patterns are three major obstacles in Jewish genealogical research.

History of Jewish Family Names Print E-mail

Hereditary family names developed at different times for different groups of people. The Chinese, for example, had hereditary family names dating back to 4th century, before the Common Era. Scandinavian countries developed mandatory family names as recently as mid-1800s (Kagnaoff, 1977). Jewish family names became more common in the 10th and 11th century as more Jews moved to the cities (Kagnaoff, 1977). The Jews of Spain, Portugal, and Italy had hereditary family names starting in the 14th century.

Everybody knows Jesus and everybody knows what he stands for and what he did for all mankind. However, you have to consider how Jesus came to this world and who his ancestors were. Besides, without his ancestors, there wouldn’t even be any Jesus. You have to consider that you also have to be thankful for Jesus' ancestors because without them, there wouldn’t be any savior at all and Christianity wouldn’t have existed.
